How to use uncertainty values in mechanical testing

Beta metallurgy expert, Dr Peter Morris has made a contribution to the inaugural newsletter of the UK’s Iron and Steel Society. The article considers how uncertainty values in mechanical testing should be used and more importantly not abused. This is of particular importance in the context of standards, which the article explores in detail. The aim of which is to clarify the potential confusion that arises when considering how uncertainty values should be used in determining whether a measured value meets the release requirements for a particular material. The full article can be accessed from the IOM3’s Iron and Steel Society newsletter page.

A one day course on ‘Understanding Mechanical Test Data for Metals’ has been developed by Beta as part of the metallurgy training courses delivered in collaboration with the AMRC Training Centre. More information can be found here.
